Ten years ago, teenagers worshiped boy bands such as N'Sync and Backstreet Boys. Nowadays, droves of teens buy screamo and pop punk records. Because teenagers' musical preferences have evolved rapidly, the Dayton, Ohio quintet, Hawthorne Heights came to fame. Lead man J.T. Woodruff, guitarists Casey Calvert and Micah Carli, bassist Matt Ridenour and drummer Eron Bucciarelli made their name by putting out a concrete demo and touring nationally. In 2003, Hawthorne Heights achieved the rock band's dream; they were signed. Thanks to Victory Records, just a year later, the group released their premiere album, “The Silence in Black and White.” The album went gold, received MTV air time and cemented the group's young fanbase.
Hawthorne Heights' new music consists of If Only You Were Lonely, an album released on February 28, 2006. If Only You Were Lonely climbed the Billboard charts with a peak position at number three on March 18, 2006. “Rolling Stone Magazine's” Christian Hoard reviewed the album saying, “This combination of grand ambitions and gut-level emotional impact should keep Hawthorne Heights' online-friends list healthy for years to come.” Hoard also described If Only You Were Lonely as “catchy, action-packed and gratuitously stylized” and the scribbler gave the album three out of five stars.
Hawthorne Heights owes a lot to MySpace, where fans happily added the band to their friends' list. A fan favorite and hit single, Saying Sorry, has traditional heart-on-sleeve emo lyrics. Woodruff sings, “Saying goodbye this time, this time/ Seeing you cry, makes me feel like saying sorry.” Hawthorne Heights is a band known for having self-deprecating, if infections, lyrics.
Hawthorne Heights currently tours on MTVu presents: Hawthorne Heights The Show Must Go On Tour with Secondhand Serenade, From First To Last, Powerspace & Brighten.
